Marmalade is a classic spread made from pureed fruit, sugar and gelling agent. A popular rumor is that jam is not vegan. But what is the truth of this claim?
Before we can answer the question of whether jam is vegan, we must first clarify what vegan means in the first place. Veganism is a way of life that involves abstaining from the consumption of products of animal origin. This excludes not only products such as meat, milk and eggs, but also foods that contain animal ingredients, such as gelatin or honey.
Jam is usually made from pureed fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, apricots or oranges. Sugar and a gelling agent are added, which ensures that the jam becomes firm. Gelling agents can be of animal or vegetable origin.
There are various gelling agents that are vegan. These include, for example, agar-agar, pectin or carrageenan. These are obtained from algae or fruits and vegetables and are therefore suitable for vegans. If the packaging of the jam does not explicitly state which gelling agent was used, you can ask the manufacturer.
Basically, jam is only vegan if it does not contain any animal ingredients. This means that even the sugar has not been bleached with bone char and that no animal gelling agents have been used. In many cases, the packaging will indicate whether the jam is vegan. If not, you should ask the manufacturer or go for another brand.
Fruit spreads are basically the same as jam, except that they usually have a lower fruit content and are less sweet. Again, whether they are vegan or not depends on the ingredients. If the fruit spreads consist only of fruit, sugar and vegetable gelling agent, they are suitable for vegans.
Jam can be vegan if it does not contain animal ingredients. This includes not only gelling agents, but also bleached sugar. If you are unsure whether a jam is vegan or not, you should ask the manufacturer. Or simply use fruit spreads, which are usually vegan.
